Green Backyard Cottages -- New Avenue Homes

If you are a homeowner, and would like to add a guest home to your backyard as an office, a living quarters for a family member or guest, or as an income-generating rental unit, here is a full-service company that can do that for you from start to finish.

New Avenue Homes, a company started by Berkeley entrepreneur Kevin Casey, will manage the entire process for you, including design, financing, permitting, and construction. These homes feature a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and a sleeping loft.

Typical monthly financing costs are in the $400-$650 range, and the units can be built with green materials and can be fitted with solar panels to provide electricity. Kevin says that you can produce twice as much power as the unit consumes, and sell the remainder back to PG&E.

After a six-month planning phase, the homes can be constructed in 12 weeks. Some owners may also qualify for the Housing Tax Credit.
